Tahini 101: Find tahini in the grocery store

grocery store tahini

So you ran out of tahini but need to make some ultra-creamy homemade hummus ASAP? Finding tahini on the shelves of your local grocery store can feel like a bit of a wild goose chase. Since tahini is still an unknown ingredient to a lot of US consumers, there are a lot of unknowns. But don’t fret, we’re here to help get you the answers to your most pressing tahini questions.

Where is tahini located in the grocery store?

As much as we wish there was one answer to this age old question, there’s not. Depending on where you shop and how the store is organized, tahini could be in a few places. Always head to the nut butter aisle first. As tahini becomes more mainstream, that scrumptious sesame butter has been making its way over to hang out with its cousins, peanut butter and almond butter. Make sure to look on the very top and very bottom shelves. It’s rare for tahini to be at eye level.

No luck in the nut butter aisle? Make your way over to the international section if your store still has one. With tahini’s popularity in the Mediterranean and Middle East, it’s often located with ingredients that also hail from those areas. (While you’re there, check out all of the other incredible ingredients. You’ll discover some amazing flavors that pair perfectly with tahini!)

Still can’t find the liquid gold? The last two places to check are the condiments and sauces section or the natural aisle. If you can’t find tahini there, it’s time to call in the reinforcements and ask a team member for some help.

Does tahini need to be refrigerated?

Tahini is just like other nut or seed butters. If it’s on the grocery shelf when you buy it, not the refrigerated section, you don’t need to refrigerate it after opening. Always follow the manufacturer recommendations, butSoom Tahini is best left in a cool, dry pantry if you like a silky-smooth, easy to mix texture. If you prefer your tahini firmer, store it in the fridge. Our sweet tahinis likeDark Chocolate Tahini with Sea Salt, are especially good right out of the fridge if you like a thick, fudgey experience.

How long is tahini good for?

Soom roasts and grinds our tahini every 6-8 weeks, so it has the longest shelf life and freshest taste of any tahini available in the States. It’s shipped to us with a 2 year shelf life. Best by dates are stamped on each lid. Although we suggest using all your tahini before the

best by date, it will keep longer if stored properly. (If you need ways to use up the rest of your jar, we have more than100+ free recipes for you to explore!)

Does tahini have dairy?

Nope! No dairy here. Soom Premium and  Organic Tahiniare made with 1 ingredient only… sesame seeds! Even our sweet tahinis are sans dairy so even those who are lactose free or vegan can enjoy them!
